Abstract
1357257 Hoods for metallurgical furnaces WAAGNER-BIRO AG 4 Sept 1972 [9 Sept 1971] 40998/72 Headings F4B and F4J A hood for leading exhaust gases away from a metallurgical furnace comprises a duct 2 surrounded by an annular chamber 3 and a ring 1 within the chamber movable between a raised inoperative position and a lowered position, in which it is adapted to seal the gap between the duct and the furnace to prevent air being drawn into the duct, the upper portion of the ring when lowered being still inside the annular chamber and coacting with the chamber and the duct to form two narrow gaps through which any escaping gases are forced to flow. The ring converges in the direction of gas flow and is formed by a structure of tubes between headers 7 and 8. Coolant is supplied to the ring via tubes 4 which serve as rods for lifting and lowering the ring. The outer wall of the chamber is formed by a cylindrical tube screen. The exhaust gases are cooled and taken to a combustion chamber where air is provided for burning them.
