Abstract

1357010 Fire extinguisher CHUBB FIRE SECURITY Ltd 21 April 1972 [3 May 1971 17 Sept 1971] 12698/71 and 43474/71 Heading A5A A fire extinguisher comprises a flexible tube containing a fire extinguishing liquid under pressure, the tube wall being made of thermoplastic material the external surface of which is exposed throughout its length, the tube thus constituting a continuous detector and exting- uisher along its length, the said pressure and the strength of the tube wall being such that the tube resists the pressure of the liquid at normal ambient temperatures but softens and bursts at any point along its length when said point is subjected to a temperature developed by a fire, thereupon releasing the liquid at that point. The extinguisher may also include a pressure or heat-sensitive isolating device to start an alarm or to switch off the equipment in which the extinguisher is housed (e.g. a television or engine compartment) when the extinguisher operates. A reservoir of fire extinguishing liquid having an outlet connected with an end of the tube may be provided so as to supply the tube with further liquid when the tube has burst at some point. The tube wall may be nylon and the extinguishant may be bromo-chloro-difluoromethane or dibromotetrafluoroethane. A low boiling liquid or inert gas (e.g. N 2 ) may be additionally incorporated to reduce the temperature at which the extinguisher will operate.
