Abstract

1356528 Chucks CARL ZEISS JENA VEB 15 Nov 1972 52688/72 Heading B3B [Also in Division H1] A magnetic chuck for clamping and centring a workpiece in a machine tool comprises a body 1, a magnetic coil 2, magnetizable pole collars 3, 4 and a further magnetizable collar 5 for closing the magnetic circuit. The body carries a clamping cylinder 7 at one end having longitudinal equiangularly spaced longitudinal slits 6 dividing it into independently expansible resilient strips 8 carrying clamping teeth 11, 12 at alternate ends to engage the workpiece. Cylinder 7 and the magnetic system fit into cap 9 and are secured by disc 10 while the cap is screwed onto body 1. On energization of coil 2, magnetic flux flows over collars 3, 4, 5, air gaps 15, 16 and strips 8; the latter being outwardly expanded by the flux in air gaps 15, 16 to permit insertion of a workpiece 13. On deenergization the strips are restored to grip and centre the workpiece over stops 11, 12. In a mandrel operating similarly, the slotted clamping cylinder is attached to the base, and within it is positioned a magnetic coil and armature which is energizable to inwardly expand the strips of the cylinder to which stops are fitted outwardly. An apertured workpiece can be placed over the mandrel to be gripped inwardly by the strips on de-energization of the coil (Fig. 3, not shown).
