Abstract

1355790 Making can ends; rip seams COOKSON SHEET METAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 14 July 1971 [26 Nov 1970 15 June 1971] 56335/70 and 28024/71 Headings B3A and B3J [Also in Division B8] A triplate can end is formed by pressing between dies to form a thinned annulus 28 defining a tear-out panel 34 while allowing the excess metal to flow from the annulus into the panel and simultaneously press-forming a series of sequentially-spaced beads 36 in the panel. The formation of the beads may be initiated prior to, and then continued during, the pressing of the annulus. The beads take up or assist in taking up the excess metal and provide zones of stiffness whereby, on removal of the panel, the latter successively bends thereacross along parallel lines 42 between the beads. The outer boundary the annulus is formed by a rounded formation 30 and the inner boundary by rounded formation instituted by the beads and intermediate steps 38. The beads may be upwardly directed, Fig. 6 (not shown), or spaced inwardly of a rounded formation defining the inner annulus boundary, Fig. 5 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the beads are disposed inwardly of a single excess metal absorbing bead 16 press-formed at the -inner boundary of the annulus.
