Abstract

1355491 Windows SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 19 April 1971 [20 Feb 1970 11 Sept 1970 5 Feb 1971] 8153/70 43477/70 and 48773/73 Divided out of 1355491 Heading B5N [Also in Division H5] A resistive heating element 4 comprising a resistive strip 6 coated on one surface with adhesive is secured to a window by placing the adhesive coated side against the window so that the element 4 is supported solely by the adhesive. In one embodiment a flat metal strip coated on one surface with a pressure-sensitive thermosetting adhesive and on the other surface with a clear plastics or enamel insulating coating is adhesively secured in a desired meander pattern to a window and the adhesive is cured by passing current through the element by means of integrally formed terminals. In another embodiment a rectangular aluminium foil has one surface bonded to a polyester resin film and the other surface coated with a thermosetting adhesive. A readily removable siliconized brown paper backing layer is secured by the adhesive to the foil. A sheet of cardboard is bonded to the polyester coated surface of the foil by wax which melts at a temperature less than the setting temperature of the adhesive. The lamina so formed is stamped or cut to form a meander shaped strip. The siliconized backing paper is removed and the remainder of the strip secured to a window by the adhesive coating. When current is passed through the element, the adhesive sets and the wax melts so that the cardboard falls away from the polyester coated surface of the foil. In a third embodiment a rectangular foil sheet bonded to a layer of polyester has its other surface coated with thermo. setting adhesive. A siliconized waxed sheet is secured to the adhesive layer and a meander pattern is punched wholly through the polyester film and aluminium foil but not through the backing sheet. The residue of the polyester coated foil is removed from the backing sheet 2 to leave the meander shaped strip 4. Another sheet of paper 10 coated with low tack adhesive is applied to protect the foil 6. Terminal connectors 15 are secured to enlarged ends 14 of the element. Each connector 15 comprises a plate 16 with an extending blade 18 secured to an end 14 by bending the edges of a channel-shaped member 20. The plate 16 and/or channel member 20 may be convex and provided with upstanding projections which penetrate the backing sheet 2 and foil 6. The element is secured to a cleaned window by removing backing sheet 2, pressing the adhesive coated element 4 and backing sheet 10 against the window, and removing the backing sheet 10.
