Abstract

1354623 Shoots and hoppers PETTY RAY GEOPHYSICAL Inc 13 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 11561/72 Heading B8S [Also in Division G1] Sorting apparatus for granular items, e.g. rice grains, comprises a plurality of parallel inclined shoots 11 down which the grains slide to be gravitationally separated, the cross-section of the shoots being tapered such that the grains become orientated longitudinally in a single line in each shoot, a plurality of parallel vibrating shoots 17 for feeding the grains randomly through adjustable gates from a hopper 24 to the shoots 11, and an examining and rejection device at the lower end of each shoot 11. 'Each examining device includes a light source and a photo-electric cell to detect any "spotted" grains and upon such detection, a blast of air is generated at a nozzle 58 to deflect that "spotted" grain from the normal travel path into a reject bin 61, the good grains passing on to a further shoot 62. The latter may be fitted with deflecting devices for sampling the accepted grains. In another embodiment, (shown in phantom lines) two sets of the apparatus are arranged back to back with the feed hopper compartmented.
