Abstract

1352341 Forging GKN SANKEY Ltd 28 June 1971 [26 June 1970] 31088/70 Heading B3H [Also in Division B5] In a method of moulding an article such as a wheel having a central portion connected to a peripheral portion by separate radial portions in a correspondingly shaped cavity, the moulding material is displaced from the central part of the cavity to its radial parts and the volume of the latter is then reduced to cause material therein to flow radially outwards to the cavity periphery around which the material flows peripherally. The moulding material may be a metal with or without fibre reinforcement, such as tungsten or boron fibres, or may be a thermoplastic resin with or without fibre reinforcement such as carbon or glass fibres, or a thermosetting resin with a fibrous reinforcement. A billet 19 of deformable material is located centrally of a compression die arrangement comprised by two annular elements 14, a split core 16 and elements 18; half of the elements 18 are shaped to form radial portions of the article whilst the other half provide thinner webs interconnecting adjacent radial portions. Initially, when the elements 14 are moved towards each other all the elements 18 are moved together to cause billet material to flow into the radial parts of the cavity and a portion to flow into the peripheral part 23; in this stage those elements 18 which shape the intermediate portions are moved to their final shaping positions. In the second stage the elements 14 and the remaining elements 18 are brought to their final positions, Fig. 3, causing material to flow radially and then peripherally around the part 23. A modified apparatus, Fig. 8, for producing a wheel with spaces between adjacent spokes comprises a die element 29 with sector shaped abutments 33 providing radial spaces therebetween and a central cavity 34; die elements 38, 40 combine with element 29 to provide the wheel rim. A material billet placed in the cavity 34 is displaced radially by an element 35 after the tops of the radial spaces have been closed by elements 37. After this initial stage the elements 37 and 38 are moved to their final positions.
