Abstract
1352114 Blasting PENNWALT CORP 13 Nov 1972 [26 Jan 1972] 52381/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division H1] An abrading apparatus for producing miniature electrical resistors comprises a work-table 16 mounted for movements in a horizontal plane and having a plurality of holding zones each adapted to support a workpiece 14, a vertically disposed nozzle 12 mounted above the worktable for directing a pressurized abrasive stream downwardly towards the work-table, means for supplying the stream to the nozzle, means for indexing the work-table so that one of the holding zones is directly beneath the nozzle, and means for initiating the flow of the abrasive stream from the nozzle. The nozzle 12 is enclosed in a hood 13 which is connected to a vacuum source for removing spent abrasive and residue from the workpieces. As described, the work-table 16 has two holding zones defined by pins 38, the workpieces being held on the table by vacuum means. The table is indexable through 180 degrees first in one direction and then in the opposite direction so that while one workpiece is being abraded in one zone, an abraded workpiece can be replaced by a new workpiece in the other zone. The indexing of the table is effected by rotation of a pinion 69 engaged by a rack on the position of a pneumatic cylinder 24, the indexed positions being determined by engagement of an abutment 28 with one or other of stops 30, 32 a, button 34, in the indexed positions of the table, operating one or other of two pairs of switches 51, 53 or 52, 54. The table can be moved in two perpendicular horizontal directions on a slide 26 to position the workpiece beneath the nozzle. The workpieces initially have a resistance less than their desired resistance and during abrading probes 18 are lowered by a pivoted arm 20 to engage and measure the resistance. The resistance increases during abrading until, at a predetermined value, the abrading is automatically terminated by operation of a pinch valve in the air supply to the nozzle. In one embodiment, the apparatus is manually controlled and separate switches are actuated to effect indexing and abrading. In an alternative embodiment, abrading is effective automatically after indexing.
