1351226 Automatic control of tension ING C OLIVETTI & C Spa 2 July 1971 [3 July 1970] 31144/71 Heading G3R Paper web 15 emerging from a teleprinter is wound on a roller 8 driven by an electric motor switched on and off by a snap action device according to the length of web between the roller and the point of emergence from the machine. From a supply roll 7 the paper passes under a platen 3, over cross-members 114, round a dancer bar 19 and a fixed bar 17 to the take-up roller 8. The dancer bar 19 is carried by a pivoted lever 20 which co-operates with a cam 23 and other linkages to operate a micro-switch 55 in the motor circuit. The motor is turned off when the bar is at a high point in its travel Fig.3 (not shown) and on at a lower point Fig.4 (not shown). If the bar reaches a further lower point due to web breakage a second micro-switch 34 is actuated to give a warning. This switch is also operated when the supply reel approaches exhaustion, as detected by a roller 83 on a pivoted arm 82. The motor drives through gearing and a clutch Fig.6 (not shown) which may be manually disengaged to release the take up roller, enabling it to be swung back about a pivot 14 for loading and unloading. A lockable cover may be provided for security of the information on the paper web.
