Abstract

1349587 Prosthetic knee joints R A ELSON 9 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53598/71 Heading A5R A prosthetic knee joint comprises a tibial member 1 having a stem 2 for insertion into, and securing to, the tibia and a spindle extending transversely to the stem, and two bearing bushes 11, 12 for anchorage in the femoral condyle and pivotally supporting opposite ends of the spindle. The stem 2 may have an extension 3 the axis of which makes an obtuse angle with the axis of the stem 2. The spindle has a part 8 of enlarged external diameter which is a force fit in a bore 6 in the extension 3. The parts 9, 10 are a push fit in the bearing bushes 11, 12 which have circumferential and axially extending grooves so that they are firmly keyed in the cement bonding them to the femoral condyle. In a modification the stem has a plate at its upper end and the extension 3 projects upwardly from the plate. The tibial member may be made from stainless steel and the bushes from high density polyethylene.
