Abstract

1349305 Cutting apparatus GERBER GARMENT TECHNOLOGY Inc 4 June 1971 [23 Nov 1970] 19028/71 Heading B4B An apparatus for cutting sheet material comprises a table having a vacuum chamber 11 over which is mounted an air-pervious base 24 for supporting a stack of material, an airimpervious cover 38 adapted to be laid over the material and an air-pervious block 36 thereby allowing air to be drawn horizontally across the stack and then downwardly to the vacuum chamber so that the stack is held on the base by air at atmospheric pressure bearing on the cover. The base 24 is made from a cellular plastics material provided with additional vertical holes and mounted on metal mesh 20 supported within the walls 10, 12, 14 of a table 10. The vacuum chamber is defined below the air-pervious base and may be divided up into separate compartments 11 by means of impervious walls 13. Each compartment is provided with a valve 17, 19, Fig. 1 which are actuated by a cam 35 on a cutter carriage 30. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the stack of material consists of sheets of porous material each sheet being covered by sheets of impervious metal foil. The air is drawn horizontally through the sheets into the vacuum chamber. In order to provide for the flow of air over the stack when the latter consists of a non- porous material, a layer (44), Fig. 4 (not shown), of an air-pervious material is laid over the stack thereby allowing the air to flow thereover. In a modification, the air-pervious layer may be replaced by a sheet of material having grooves (50), Fig. 5A (not shown) or a sheet of corrugated cardboard. In a further modification, the airimpervious cover is replaced by a blanket 46a, Fig. 9 having flutes 50a formed in its surface engaging the top of the stack, the flutes being closed at their ends. In a modification of the latter embodiment, the blanket material is formed into two endless bands (68), Fig. 8 (not shown), entrained over rollers supported on the tool carriage. The cutter carriage may be provided with a pair of endless belts 54, Fig. 6 arranged to ride over the cover 38 to thereby smooth the sheet material and also serve to seal the cuts made in the cover in order to minimize the loss of vacuum. A pair of rollers 62 are mounted adjacent the cutter blade 60 and roll of the material to press out any wrinkles therein.
