Abstract

1349011 Press forming glass articles CORNING GLASS WORKS 3 Sept 1971 [8 Sept 1970] 41141/71 Heading C1M An apparatus for press-forming an article from a mould charge of molten glass includes a female mould member 27, a male mould member 25 actuated by a hollow piston-rod 16 and associated pressurized fluid cylinder 15 and first piston 13, and a ring mould 26 mounted on the lower end of rod 16 and adapted to be clamped in position by means of a piston-rod 20 extending through the interior of the hollow rod 16 and its associated piston 19 and fluid cylinder 18. The apparatus includes a system for controlling the pressing forces which includes a main control valve 50 that may be actuated both mechanically and by fluid pressure. Two cam means 33, 34 are mounted on the piston-rod 16 for movement therewith, upward movement of the cam 33 causing the valve to supply fluid to the upper face of piston 13 while downward movement of cam 34 causes fluid to be supplied to the lower face of the piston thus maintaining the piston-rod 16 in a stable position. The system further includes a two position four way solenoid valve 127 which in its normal position supplies fluid to the control valve 50 to actuate the valve 50 so that it supplies fluid to the lower face of the piston 13, while in a second position it supplies fluid to actuate the valve to supply fluid to the upper face of the piston 13. A second solenoid valve 130 in its normal position vents the upper end of the cylinder 18 and in a second position supplies fluid to the upper end of the cylinder 18. Each of the valves 121 and 130 are controlled by a timing device which actuates the valves simultaneously and returns valve 121 to the normal position briefly (e.g. 0À06 seconds) before returning the valve 130.
