Abstract

1348354 Electromagnetic clutches; clutch/brake combinations; disc brakes BENDIX CORP 16 March 1972 [31 March 1971 (4)] 12453/72 Headings F2C F2L and F2E In an electromagnetic clutch a stationary electromagnet 95 or 116 when energized moves an armature 14 or 154 towards it to engage the clutch, there being a clutch engaging member 60 or 160 mounted on the armature such that relative rotation between the armature and the clutch engaging member causes adjustment for wear to take place automatically. In the clutch of Fig. 2 the driving member is a pulley 13 to which a friction ring 60 is attached by diaphragm spring 40, this ring 60 being attached to armature 14 by a screw thread. On energization of magnet 95 armature 14 is drawn to the output member 12 and if any wear has occurred of friction ring 60 such that armature 14 contacts the output member before the cone clutch 70, 62 is engaged then the difference in speed between members 14 and 60 causes the friction ring 60 to be screwed towards the surface 72 to engage the clutch. A drag ring 68 ensures that this adjustment is maintained and a cone brake formed by members 80 and 90 is also provided, operated by the return spring 40 of the clutch. In a further embodiment the clutch is a disc clutch, having discs 134 and 136 (Fig. 5) the member equivalent to friction ring 60 being a presser member 160 attached to the output member 130 of the clutch as is armature 154. The connection between armature 154 and member 160 may be the screw thread as illustrated in Fig. 2 (Fig. 3, not shown) but it is also possible to have pins 182 of the armature 154 which coact with cam surfaces 185 of the member 160 to cause the axial movement of member 160 on armature 154 when the armature 154 contacts a surface of the input member 122 before engagement of the clutch. Disengagement of the clutch is achieved by tension springs 186, but these may be replaced by compression springs in pockets in the driving member or by an annular permanent magnet (or a set of magnets) on the surface of the driven member 138 facing the armature. The invention may be incorporated in a motor vehicle air conditioning system, to drive a fan. In Fig. 2 the friction ring may be of organic friction material.
