Abstract
1347764 Cobalt - rare earth alloys GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 22 April 1971 [30 April 1970 2 Nov 1970] 10879/71 Headings C7A, C7D A sintered cobalt-rare earth intermetallic product ranges in composition from a single solid Co 5 R phase to that composed of Co 5 R phase and a second phase of Co-R in amount up to 30 by weight per cent of the product and richer in rare earth metal than Co 5 R, the sintered product having been heat-aged at a temperature within 400 C below the sintering temperature so as to precipitate a Co-R phase richer in rare earth metal than Co 5 R in amount to increase the intrinsic coercive force and/or normal coercive force by at least 10%, R being a rare earth metal of the lanthanide series or yttruim, or a mixture thereof. In examples powders of base alloys containing varying amounts from 66 to 68À2 by weight per cent of Co and the remainder Sm or mixture of Sm with other rare earths were mixed with Co-R alloy powders richer in rare earth content, magnetically aligned in a magnetic field, pressed, sintered at temperatures of 1075C for 1 hour or 1100C for up to 20 hours and aged at temperature of 900C - 1000C for up to 17 hours.
