1347329 Indicating position digitally; controlling reactors WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 13 Dec 1971 [27 Jan 1971] 57741/71 Headings G4H and G6C [Also in Division G1] A device for detecting whether a control rod in a nuclear reactor is in a particular position comprises a plurality of magnetically soft C-shaped cores 10 interlaeaved as shown in Fig. 1 and connecting flux collector rings 12 arranged around the control rod housing, and detector means responsive to a change in magnetic flux in each core 10 produced when a magnetized part 14 of the control rod extends between the rings 12. The rings 12 make the device insensistive to lateral displacements of the control rod. In Fig. 5, the detector means is a saturable transformer 18. A D.C. winding 28 or a permanent magnet (24, Fig. 3, not shown) may be used to produce a bias magnetic flux in the core which may be sufficient or insufficient to saturate the transformer. The magnetized part 14 of the control rod may aid or oppose the bias flux. A D.C. coil may be provided, or may already be present in a magnetic jack for the control rod, for magnetizing the part 14, which is magnetically hard. A plurality of the devices may be arranged with their cores overlapping (Fig. 6, not shown) and biased so that all the devices above the top end of the magnetized part 14 have saturated transformers (no output in secondary) and all the others have unsaturated transformers.
