Abstract
1346265 Hydrodesulphurizing heavy oils TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 24 March 1972 13907/72 Heading C5E A process for hydrodesulphurizing heavy hydro - carbon oils having Conradson carbon residues of at least 1% comprises contacting the oil with hydrogen in a presaturation zone at below 700‹ F. and then contacting the oil, substantially saturated with hydrogen, with a hydrodesulphurization catalyst at above 700‹ F. and in the presence of gaseous hydrogen. Both stages can be carried out in a single vessel having a saturation zone filled with an inert packing, e.g. alumina, disposed above a catalytic zone containing the catalyst, e.g. nickel or cobalt together with molybdenum or tungsten in the oxide or sulphide form on alumina. The oil is passed downwardly through the two zones and hydrogen is introduced at the bottom of the catalyst bed and at the bottom of the inert packing to flow upwardly. Suitable feeds are atmospheric and vacuum residues, heavy gas oil, shale oil, tar sand oil and crude oil.
