Abstract
1345710 Wet process phosphoric acid; sodium or potassium tripolyphosphate ALBRIGHT & WILSON Ltd 28 June 1971 [26 June 1970] 31172/70 Heading C1A Cationic impurities are removed from wet process phosphoric acid by contacting the acid with an alkali metal or ammonium condensed phosphate (e.g. sodium tripolyphosphate or sodium pyrophosphate), which forms a complex with the cationic impurities in the presence of a substantial excess by volume based on the volume of said acid of a water miscible organic solvent (e.g. water miscible alcohols or ketones, to form a liquid phase of the solvent and acid and a separate solid or liquid for impurity phase and separating the phases. The condensed phosphate may be present in an amount from 1 to 5% by weight of the phosphoric acid. Preferably, wet phosphoric acid mixed with, e.g. acetone is passed counter currently to the impurity phase and the solvent is separated from the aqueous phosphoric acid by distillation. After separation of the impurity layer NaOH or or KOH may be added to the phosphoric acid which may be converted into sodium or potassium tripolyphosphate. The water miscible solvent may be mixed with a water immiscible solvent, e.g. dichloromethane or a liquid petroleum fraction.
