Abstract

1345351 Rotary valve engines L POTT 19 March 1971 7286/71 Heading F1B In a piston-type I.C. engine having one or more engine cylinders 14, Fig. 1, the flow through the admission and exhaust ports of the cylinders is controlled by a single rotary valve 54. Bellows or piston members 11 subjected to cylinder pressure as through passages 12, provide via levers 18 and forked levers 21 an axial thrust on the valve in addition to that exerted by a spring, to bias the valve into operative engagement with its seating 61 against the pressure in the cylinders. The valve is rotated about pin 59 by a gear 56 and an engaging worm or drive shaft 38. The valve has inlet ports 62 and exhaust ports 63 in its working face, the ports 63 communicating with a duct 65 in the valve's central spindle which may also include a duct for the ports 62. Alternatively the inlet and exhaust ports may communicate with outer annular ducting. In addition to its corresponding inlet and outlet porting, the seating 61 may have recesses in its working face communicating with the porting via channels and located so that the porting and recesses together provide a symmetrical arrangement to thereby apply cylinder pressure symmetrically to the working face of the valve, Figs.3 and 4 (not shown). The cooperating working faces of the valve and its seat may be inclined or curved.
