Abstract

1343770 Transport systems ROSEMOUNT ENG CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [7 April 1970] 16430/70 Heading B7L In a transport system using electrical power, comprising a pick-up body 1 attached to a vehicle and spaced apart from a conductor rail 2 of cruciform section to form air gaps 6, 7, 8 between the rail and pick-up body, current is transmitted across the narrow gaps 8 by electrical discharge, ionization of the air in the gaps being facilitated either by a reduction in pressure in the gaps produced by a vacuum pump 19, or by hot gas from a source such as a jet engine which raises the temperature of the air in the gaps. A source 9 of radio activity or radio frequency may be included, to help ionization. The distance between the conductor rail and the pick-up body is maintained by either the vacuum pump 19 or the jet engine. Electrical insulation 10 may be provided on the pick-up body so that accidental contact between the rail and the pick-up body does not cause a short circuit of the ionization path. Instead of having cruciform section the rail may be round, rectangular, or have concave sides in order to provide suitable constrictions in the air passage to promote pressure reduction in the gaps. The vehicle is intended to be suspended below the rail 2.
