Abstract
1341793 Mixing circulating slurries INDUS TRIE-EN HANDELMAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR DE MIDDEN BETUWE NV 27 Jan 1972 [12 Feb 1971] 3943/72 Heading B1C [Also in Division A1] In order that an animal feed system should operate with a slurry which is as viscous as possible, a pump 11 maintains slurry under pressure in a main feed line 14 during the feeding and intervening periods. This pressure prevents any deterioration or separation to occur in the feed slurry remaining in line 14. A horizontal cylindrical feed mixer 1 mixes feed flour and water into a slurry which is heated and dispensed via pipes 28 into troughs 30. A return line 16 leads from the feed line 14 to the mixer 1 and is closed during the feeding period by a three-way control valve 12 so that the feed line 14 forms a closed loop. A switch sensitive to the pressure in the feed line 33 controls the pump 11 during this period so that pressure in the line is maintained at 3 atm. At the end of the feed period the slurry remaining in pipe 14 is maintained at this pressure whilst the interior of the mixer is washed by water which is limited in quantity to that necessary for the next feed slurry. Prior to the next feed period, the return line 16 is opened and the slurry in the feed line 14 is pumped to the mixer 1 where it is mixed with a freshly made slurry. The mixer 1 comprises a cylindrical vessel having two helical scrapers 21 mounted on a hollow shaft 20 which is conected at respective ends to a motor 23 and a water pipe. A sleeve surmounts the shaft 20 and communicates with its interior by a radial bore so that water may pass to spray nozzles 7. An outlet 25 connects the mixer to a conduit 19 on the suction side of the pump 11, and is covered by a curved screen (26, Fig. 3, not shown). Feed passes into the mixer from a hopper 17 which is protected from any vapor created during the washing process by a cover 18 which is actuated by a solenoid 31, and closes the inlet. A heating jacket 3 supplied with warm water from a heater 4 is mounted around the lower half of the vessel so as to heat the feed slurry.
