Abstract
1,239,710. Processing radio-active waste. COMMISSARIAT A L' ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 25 June, 1970 [7 July, 1969], No. 30912/70. Heading G6R. A crucible 10 of electrically insulating refractory material surrounded by an inductor coil 12 supplied from a high-frequency current generator 14, is supplied with powder containing fission products from a calcining unit 26. Vitrification adjuvants in the form of a powder are supplied from a hopper 30 via a vibrator 32, these adjuvants together with the fission products forming a glass which is inductively heated by the coil 12 when in the molten state. A solid glass plug forms in the discharge nozzle 21 of the crucible 10 and to release a quantity of the molten glass the plug is melted by an inductor coil 22 whereupon glass flows into a steel storage container 38 heated by an inductor coil 40. The apparatus is contained within a hot cell 36. Suitable compositions for the adjuvants are described.
