Abstract

1,239,743. Hydraulic motor wheels. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 3 Oct., 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 30937/67. Heading B7H. In vehicle transmission mechanism of the kind comprising a fluid motor 1 for driving an individual road wheel 6, the motor housing 2 includes a cylindrical extension 2b extending coaxially of the motor shaft 5 to form a stub axle for mounting the wheel 6, reduction gearing having an input member driven by the motor shaft 5 has an output member for connection to the wheel, and trunnions 2a, one provided on the housing 2 for engagement with front suspension links 3, 4 to permit steering of the wheel. A steering arm 19 is secured to the housing. A suspension spring 20 acts on the link 3 and a damper 21 is connected to the link 4 by stirrups 22. The reduction gearing comprises two series-connected epicyclic trains. An input shaft 11 connected to the motor shaft 5 by a coupling 10 carries-a sun gear 12 meshing with planet pinions 13 which also mesh with internal teeth on a reaction member 8 fixed to the extension 2b by bolts 9 and are carried by a sun gear 14 meshing with planet pinions 15 which are mounted in a carrier 18 bolted to the reaction member 8 and mesh with internal teeth on an annular member 16 secured to the wheel 6 by bolts 17. Each of a plurality of motors 1 may be associated with one of the driven wheels of a vehicle and supplied with motive fluid from one or more pumps A driven by the vehicle engine B.
