Abstract

123,811. Webster, G. March 5, 1918. Nailing, hand-tools for.- Relates to hand-actuated nailing-machines for use in lasting boots and shoes of the kind in which nails are automatically fed from a nail box or hopper to an inclined raceway or shoot which delivers the nails point downwards into the nozzle of the machine ready to be driven home by the driver, and wherein the delivery of the nails from the raceway to the nozzle is automatically controlled by means of a separator operated by the plunger or driver which also actuates the nail box through link or other mechanism. The barrel 1 has a plunger 2 and a driver 3, and supports by means of straps 13, the raceway, and the nail box 16 with its casing 18. Links 19, 19, 19 connect the plunger to a pivoted arm 22 carrying a spring pawl 21, which actuates a ratchet 20 on the supporting spindle 17 of the nail box, whereby the latter is rotated each time the plunger is raised. When the plunger is depressed, the pawl rides over the ratchet teeth. The bottom 16a of the nail box has slots, Fig. 8, which are extended a short distance up the side of the box. The raceway consists of side plates 12, Fig. 5, separated by a distance-piece 12b, and covered by a guard strip 14, to which is pivoted, vertically at the top and horizontally at the bottom, gates 14, 14. By this construction, the nails are visible and faulty nails may be easily removed. At the lower end, the nails are separated one at a time by the forked points 11 of a separator 7, Fig. 9, having also a guide-blade 9 working within a transverse slot in the lower part of the barrel and.the nozzle 4. The separator is pivoted at its upper end to the barrel, and has an inclined slot 7a in which works a roller 8, carried by the plunger and also passing through a vertical slot 6 in the barrel. As the plunger is raised, the separator moves to separate the second and third tacks in the raceway and push the first tack into the nozzle; as it is depressed the separator retires and allows another nail to pass. The nozzle is provided with projecing stops 10 and a U-shaped spring 10, Fig. 4, the free ends of which support the head of the nail before it is driven.
