Abstract

1,236,374. Drying printed or coated webs or sheets. SERICOL GROUP Ltd. 17 July, 1968 [17 July, 1967], No. 32812/67. HeadingF4G [Also in Division H5] Printed or coated webs or sheets are dried by subjecting them to microwave heating and gas (e.g. warm air) jets having a velocity of at least 7000 ft./min. A suitable apparatus comprises parallel conveyer bands 106 for conveying the web or sheets between the upper and lower portions of a serpentine waveguide 100 fed with microwave energy by a magnetron, in a cabinet 108. The space surrounding the upper portion of the waveguide forms a plenum chamber supplied with air under pressure by pump 110. Air issues from the plenum chamber in the form of jets through slits 112. The space surrounding the lower portion of the waveguide is connected to a suction pump to assist in holding the web or sheets on the conveyer bands. In another apparatus, the waveguide is substantially straight and lies in the upper portion of a plenum chamber, the lower boundary of which comprises a substantially non-microwave energy absorbing perforated screen (e.g. glass-fibre reinforced plastics).
