Abstract
1,235,768. 6,7 - Methylene - 20 - spiroxanes. MERCK & CO. Inc. 17 March, 1969 [22 March, 1968], No. 13874/69. Heading C2U. Novel 3 - oxo - (6α,7α and 6#,7#) - methylene- 20-spirox-4-enes and -1,4-dienes that optionally contain 11#-hydroxy, 11-oxo, 21-oxo and 9α- fluoro substituents, and their novel 19-nor analogues, and corresponding 11α-ols, are prepared by reacting the corresponding 4,6-dienes not containing a #'-double bond or an 11-oxo group with dimethyl-oxo-sulphonium methylide and when the #<SP>1</SP>-compounds are required, dehydrogenating the products with dichlorodicyanobenzoquinane, and when the 11-ones are required, oxidizing the 11-ols. The product mixtures of 6α,7α- and 6α,7α-isomers may be separated by chromatography if required. The novel spiroxane compounds, which block the salt-retaining effects of aldosterene and other salt-retaining steroids, may be made up into pharmaceutical compositions with suitable carriers.
