Abstract
1,235,112. Continuous casting. CONSOLIDUS Ltd. 19 June, 1968 [19 June, 1967 (2)], Nos. 28210/67 and 28211/67. Heading B3F. The reduced end 11 of a mould 10 is encased in hard-set (aluminous) refractory cement 12 and inserted as a close fit (sealed with cement or mortar) in the outlet 14 of a holding vessel 13; the remainder of the mould is enclosed in a cooling jacket 25, 26. The mould 10 comprises two or more longitudinal parts of graphite or material containing a substantial proportion of graphite and may cast polygonal sections; the casting may emerge intermittently. The parts may be wound with wire to compress the joints and may be held together by graphite studs. Wire 21 around the inlet end 11 may be insulated from the mould and used as an electric heater. If the wire 21 is not used as a heater, there may be a spiral electric heater 20 in the cement 12. The mould inlet is heated before casting and temperature distribution at the inlet end controlled during casting. Channels 18 in the vessel lining 16 adjacent the outlet 14 contain carbon grains as electric heating elements. Flat inner faces of copper cooling plates 25 contact flat faces of the mould 10, but for local variation of cooling there may be roughening or grooving of one or other of the surfaces. Coolant flows through passages in the plates may be varied. Each plate is secured to a wider steel backing plate 26 and these are secured as opposed pairs by spring-loaded bolts. A gasket 27 insulates the mould jacket 25, 26 from the metal casing 17 of the vessel 13.
