Abstract

1,234,922. Measuring hydrogen content of fluids. UNITED NUCLEAR CORP. Jan.13, 1969, No. 1921/69. Heading G1N. The hydrogen content of liquid sodium 12 is measured by a cell consisting of a tubular outer electrode 11 having a portion 13 permeable to hydrogen and an inner reference electrode comprising a hydrogen source 17 of predetermined activity in a chamber 16 having a portion 18 permeable to hydrogen, joined by an electrolyte 21 containing hydride ions and conducting solely by ion transportation. The electrodes may be made of iron, nickel, vanadium, cobalt, or an alloy thereof, the hydrogen permeable portions 13, 18 being thinner than the other portions. The electrolyte 21 may be an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide or a mixture thereof, such as a eutectic mixture of LiC1, KC1 or LiBr, KBr, containing about 0À2% of an alkali or alkaline earth metal hydride such as LiH, NaH, CaH 2 , SrH 2 , BaH 2 , KH, RbH, CaH. The hydrogen source may comprise a fused alkaline earth metal saturated or oversaturated with alkaline earth metal hydrides, e.g. a two phase mixture of Ca-CaH 2 , or an alkali metal in equilibrium with its hydride, e.g. Na-NaH. A solid hydrogen source may be used, comprising calcium-hydrogen, zirconium-hydrogen or yttriumhydrogen.
