Abstract

1,229,075. Road making machines. BARBER-GREENE CO. 21 Nov., 1969 [27 June, 1969], No 57200/69. Heading E1G. [Also in Division G3] A finishing machine for road surfaces comprises a pair of conveyors for delivering material from a hopper to a work station at a continuously variable rate, a pair of distribution screws being provided at the station. Sensing paddles detect the volume of material within the working area and are associated with potentiometers for controlling the conveyors and distribution screws on each side of the machine. When the amount of material delivered to the work station and sensed by a paddle differs from a required amount, an error signal is generated by an amplifier to control a pair of solenoids for operating a ram which has a lever to adjust the amount of fluid delivered to a hydrostatic motor. The speed of the motor determines the rate of advance of the conveyors and the speed of the feed screws. A feedback potentiometer is coupled to the lever of the ram and is connected to the amplifier. In another arrangement, the potentiometer is connected to a control bridge through a manual-automatic selector switch. The bridge is connected to a solenoid valve for adjusting the amount of fluid delivered to a hydraulic ram. A gate is coupled to the ram and controls the quantity of material delivered from the hopper to the conveyors. A feedback potentiometer is coupled to the gate and is connected to the bridge system. Movement of potentiometer arm 76 in response to a change of material at one side of the work station unbalances a bridge circuit so that servo device 78 operates relay 82 or 83. Solenoid valve 53 or 54 responds and ram 57 adjusts pump 59 to vary the rate of delivery of material. Arm 77 rebalances the bridge to set the seasing means of a new rate of material flow. A potentiometer 86 is connectable to the feedback potentiometer 73 for manual override operation. A potentiometer 11 controls the feeder-screw apparatus on the other side of the machine.
