Abstract
1,229,049. Seals. LICENTIA PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 23 Aug., 1968 [24 Aug., 1967], No. 40390/68. Heading F2B. [Also in Division F4] In a coolant apparatus for the supply and discharge of coolant to and from a liquidcooled rotor of an electrical machine, e.g. a turbo-generator, comprising a connecting head in which a gas protective chamber 10 is disposed between the coolant outlet 6 and a seal 15 to atmosphere and a non-contact gap seal 9 or a sliding seal is located between the chamber 10 and the outlet 6, the coolant leakage through the seal 9 being collected in the chamber 10 and returned to the cooling circuit, the coolant system includes a storage tank 28 disposed at a predetermined height above the connecting head and a coolant return unit 32; the tank 28, the gas chamber 10 and the unit 32 all being subjected to the same gas pressure. The connecting head has a stub shaft 2 which is secured to the rotor shaft 1 and surrounded by a housing 5 connected to the bearing housing 16 of the turbo-generator (not shown). Cooling water is supplied from the tank 28 to a bore 3 in the shaft 2 via a pipe 29 and pump 30 and returned to the tank through a passage 4, chamber 8, outlet 6 and pipe 31. The gas chamber 10 is separated by a partition 12 and a labyrinth seal 11 from a further gas chamber 14 sealed by the seal 15 which co-operates with a collar 26 on the shaft 2 and is supplied with lubricating oil which leaks into the chamber 14 and is removed through a pipe 24. Cooling water passing through the seal 9 to the chamber 10 is drained through a pipe 27 and collects in the return unit 32 which includes a collecting vessel 36, a return pump 37 and a float-controlled regulating valve 38 which controls the level 39 of the water in the unit, excess water being returned to the tank 28 through pipe 40. Nitrogen under pressure is supplied through a pipe 34 from a gas cylinder 33 to the tank 28 and from there to the gas chambers 10 and 14 and the unit 32 through pipes 35 and 27 respectively.
