[Also in Divisions C4-C5] The invention comprises compounds of the general formula where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group and a process for the preparation of N<SP>1</SP>, - N<SP>4</SP> - di - (arenesulphonyl) - 2 - nitro - p - phenylene diamines which comprises heating 2-nitrop-phenylenediamine with at least 2 mols. of substituted or unsubstituted arenesulphonyl chloride per mol. of nitro-phenylene diamine in a liquid reaction medium comprising an acid binding agent until both amino groups of the nitrophenylenediamine starting material have been substituted. The products are converted to nitro dyes (see Divisions C4-C5).
