Abstract
1,228,122. Glass bulbs or phials. LABORAVER. 5 March, 1969 [5 March, 1968], No. 11689/69. Heading C1M A snap-off neck (2) in a glass ampoule or like container (1) is provided by urging a thin blade (11) against the neck at a temperature of 130- 180 C., the blade being of annealed silver, aluminium or aluminium alloy, so as to leave a trace (5) on the neck, the metal deposited on the trace causing internal stresses to be set up along which the neck may be broken off by a flexional stress. Preferably the ampoule executes one complete revolution about its axis during the contact with the blade. Preferably the trace is made in the cooling stage after drawing the ampoule from a glass tube. In a conventional rotary machine for forming ampoules 1 from a glass tube 10, there are two annular rotating plates 6 and 7. The ampoule 1 is drawn off from the tube 10 and the lower part of tube 10 sealed. The trace 5 is then provided by contacting blades 11, which are mounted on arms 12 and urged towards the ampoules by springs 14, with the ampoules, which are themselves rotated by mounting means 8 and 9.
