Abstract

A high-melting metal component is introduced in controlled quantity into a melt of a low-melting base metal by feeding a rod of the high-melting component into the melt while subjecting the rod to ultrasonic vibration and cooling that portion of the rod which extends above the melt surface. The rate of dissolution may be controlled by adjusting the depth of immersion of the rod and the exciter frequency of the ultrasonic generator. This frequency may be automatically adjusted to be the natural frequency of the system as it alters during dissolution. The rod may be hollow or it may be formed of sections or annuli of different metals. An example of the production of an alloy of Zn with 0À15% Ti and 0À60% Cu is given in which separate rods of Cu and Ti are introduced into a Zn melt in an induction furnace each attached to its own ultrasonic generator. The use of rods containing 76% Ni, 15% Cr, and of Mg with a coating of Al, and of Mg tubes is also referred to.
