1,224,030. Porous vitreous shapes. WASAGCHEMIE A.G. 26 April, 1968 [26 April, 1967], No. 19953/68. Heading C1M. Porous vitreous shapes are made by dissolving pulverulent material of a silicate and/or oxide nature in an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, the proportion of the material being within the range of from 0.02 to 0.8 part by weight per 1 part by weight of alkali metal silicate, assisting solution of the pulverulent material either (a) by subjecting it to wet grinding in the solution, or (b) by blowing the pulverulent material on to the surface of the solution moving at such a velocity as to prevent or greatly reduce the piling up of the particles on the surface, or by using methods (a) and (b) simultaneously, drying the resulting product to drive off free water, disintegrating the dried product to a particle size within the range of from 0.001 to 10 millimetres, if it does not already have a particle size within that range, heating the resulting product in a shaped condition at a temperature within the range of from 650‹ to 1000‹ C. to obtain a foamed product, and then cooling. Method (b) may be carried out by impelling the solution by means of a propeller stirrer situated within an open-ended passage below the level of the solution in the vessel so as to cause the solution and solid material suspended therein to circulate continuously in one direction through the passage and in the reverse direction in a space outside the passage. The pulverulent material may comprise one or more silicate and/or one or metal oxides such as zinc oxide, glass powder, aluminium oxide feldspar and lead dioxide. Calcium metaborate may be added. In an example, 30 litres of water glass is diluted into 30 litres of water and 50 grams sugar, 125 gms. zinc sulphate and 1000 gms. borax are dissolved. A mixture of 1-5 kg. of zinc oxide; 1À2 kg. of calcium metaborate, 0À2 kg. of aluminium oxide; 1.5 kg. of feldspar and 2À5 kg. of cullet powder is blown on to the rapidly moving surface of the solution pumped through a grinding mill or refiner. After evaporation and drying, the product is foamed in moulds or on a travelling band.
