Abstract
1,223,849. Arc furnaces. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Oct., 1968 [2 Nov., 1967], No. 49917/67. Heading H5H. To reduce the reactance of the supply conductors and balance the reactances of the phases, the electrodes 1, 2, 3 of a three phase arc furnace are supported vertically by respective electrode holders 29, 35, 21 and the two outer holders 29, 21 are connected electrically to a respective group of at least three vertically spaced conductors e.g. conductors 25, 26, 27 and 17, 18, 19, whilst the central holder 35 is connected to a group comprising at least one electrical conductor, e.g. conductors 32, 33, 34, the conductors of the two outer groups being parallel to the conductors of the central group. As shown, the central conductor 33 of the central group lies at the intersection of the diagonals joining conductors 17 and 27, and 19 and 25, and the other two conductors 32, 34 are mounted above and below it. In Fig. 3 (not shown), the three conductors of the central group are mounted in triangular formation about, the point of intersection and in Fig. 4 (not shown) the central conductors are more widely spaced than in Fig. 1. The inner group may comprises two vertically spaced central conductors (Fig. 5 and 6, not shown). Finally the central group may comprise a single conductor at the point of intersection. The invention is shown applied to the arrangement disclosed in Specification 975,651 (A.E.1). The outer group of conductors 25, 26, 27 is connected to a vertical conductor 31 secured to connecting member 16, the outer group of conductors 17, 18, 19 is connected to a vertical conductor 24 secured to a connecting member 14, and the inner group of conductors 32, 33, 34 is connected to a conductor 36 secured to connecting member 13. Flexible curtains of conductors 9 connect the connecting members 13, 14 and 16 to pairs of conductors 6, 7, 8, supplied from the phases of transformer 4.
