Abstract

122,335. Marks, E. C. R., (United States Nickel Co.). April 11, 1918. Nickel chloride and sulphate.-Copper-nickel matte is roasted until it contains 8 to 12 per cent of sulphur, and is then reduced by gases, coke, or other means. If the matte is sufficiently low in sulphur, the roasting step is unnecessary. The reduced product is leached with sulphuric or hydrochloric acid or copper sulphate to dissolve the nickel and nickel sulphide without dissolving the copper. Some of the partially roasted matte or some metallic nickel may be added to prevent solution of copper or to ensure precipitation of any copper which may have been dissolved. The solution of nickel salt may be treated in any way for the extraction of nickel, for example by the addition of lime and the subsequent reduction of the hydrate.
