Abstract
1,221,799. Aminoacetic acids. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 7 Feb., 1968 [7 Feb., 1967], No. 6117/68. Heading C2C. Aminoacetic acids of the general formula RNHCH 2 COOH, where R = H or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic group are prepared by reacting a monohalogenoacetic acid with NH 3 so as to mono- and/or di-substitute the ammonia, or a primary aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic amine so as to mono-substitute the primary amine groups at a pH above 7 in the presence of metal ions which act as complex formers for the amino acetic acid formed with the use of at least 0À5 mol. of NH 3 per 1 mol. of monohalogenoacetic acid or at least 0À8 equiv. of primary amine groups per 1 mol. of monohalogenoacetic acid. The metal ions are preferably the bivalent or trivalent ions of the metals of Groups I-III and VIII of the Periodic Table of elements according to Mendeleef e.g. Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, or Al which are employed in the form of a water-soluble salt, oxide or hydroxide. Chloro-acetic acid is the preferred starting material. In the examples chloroacetic acid is reacted with NH 3 , monoethanolamine, cyclohexylamine, ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine and methylamine. Ammonia yields either iminodiacetic acid or glycine.
