Abstract
1,220,971. Injection moulding. R. J. COLLION. 16 Oct., 1968 [17 Oct., 1967], No. 49105/68. Heading B5A. A device for withdrawing and ejecting the mould runner sprue of an injection moulding machine comprises a shaft 6 with a harpoon 7 at one end to penetrate the sprue 5 and a piston 10 in an air cylinder 11 at the other, a sprue ejection member 15 slidable on the shaft, and a passage 12 for projecting cooling air from the cylinder over the harpoon when the sprue has been ejected. When the shaft 6 is moved axially for the harpoon to pierce the sprue in the mould 1 the member 15 is urged rearwardly against the end of the shaft by a spring 22 acting via a plate 16 and rods 17. The shaft and rods 17 are slidably mounted in a platform 18 forming part of the drum of a rotary moulding machine; retraction of the shaft brings the member 15 into contact with the platform such that continued retraction of the shaft effects the ejection of the sprue from the harpoon, and frees a transverse passage 13 in the shaft from engagement with a wall of the member 15 so that cooling air compressed in the cylinder flows over the harpoon.
