A drilling machine for cross-drilling ports 54 in the recess 48 of a cylinder block 47 comprises a drill head 4, slidably mounted on rods 3, secured to column 1, and a work support 21. Head 4 has a balance weight 6, and the drill 19 is driven from the spindle 11 of a radial arm drilling machine on which the column is mounted, via gears 13-17. Work support 21 is secured to the table of the drilling machine, and comprises a table 24 having rollers 25, 26, which slide on guides 22, 23. Two pairs of work supporting rollers 27, 28, are mounted on the table 24, and the cylinder block is located by a fixed end stop 31, and a clamp 32. The latter comprises a bracket 33, a plunger 35 slidable in the bracket having a bayonet groove 39 which co-operates with a peg 38, a pad 43 on the plunger for engaging the end of the cylinder block, and a projection 44 for engaging in the cylinder bores so as to locate the latter after indexing. Table 24 is locked in the required position by clamps 45. Before a cylinder block is mounted in position for drilling, a spigot 49 is detachably fitted into a hole 51 in table 24, which is located on base 21 by a locating pin 53, and the base is adjusted on the machine table so that drill 19 is located in the bore 52 of spigot 49. Pin 53, and spigot 49 are removed, the cylinder block is clamped on table 24 with projection 44 entering a cylinder, pin 53 is inserted, and the hole 54 is drilled. The cylinder block is indexed into each drilling position. The gears for driving the drill may be replaced by bevel gears, or a roller chain.
