Abstract
1,217,267. Moulding particulate materials. ISRAEL MINING INDUSTRIES, INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT. 10 Dec., 1968 [6 Feb., 19681, No. 58702/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C1] A refractory and ceramic particulate mass, of material having a Youngs modulus greater than 5 x 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i., a Charpy impact strength of less than 10 lb. ft., and comprising coarse grains of a diameter not exceeding 20 mm. and not more than 30% of fine grains of a diameter of up to 2% of the coarsest particles, is compacted within a mould by one or more impacts having an energy of 0À1 to 10À0 kgm./cm.<SP>2</SP> and producing a pressure of less than 50 t/cm.<SP>2</SP>, which crush some of the grains and produce a compact wherein the amount of crushed grain is at least 20% of the total mass. The mass may incorporate up to 6% of a liquid before introduction thereof into the mould. The grains may be of SiC; MgO; corundum; silica glass; mullite (3Al 2 O 3 .2SiO 2 ); cordierite; steatite; SiO 2 (quartz); bauxite; zirconia; zircon (ZrO 2 .SiO 2 ); soda lime glass; glass ceramics (deritrified); borosilicate glass. Examples of compaction by a falling weight are given, of specified grain mesh distribution, in which the materials comprise silicon carbide grains; quartz, or corundum or silicon carbide, or silica glass; a layer of silicon carbide intermediate layers of alumina, and wherein each layer includes aqueous sulphite lye; silicon carbide containing sulphite lye moulded into a pipe or crucible; zirconia moulded into a brick; mullite mixed with sulphite lye; a silicon carbide and mullite mixture, including sulphite, lye, compacted into a saggar which is subsequently fired at 1400‹ C.; bauxite with sulphite lye moulded into a brick; periclase with water and glycerol moulded into a cylinder which is then fired; silicon carbide grains, coated with phenol formaldehyde pre-polymer cured at 160‹ C., in the mould after compaction to form pellets, and which may be carbonised to obtain SiC- carbon composites in an oxygen-free nitrogen atmosphere as the temperature is raised to 900‹ C. in specified stages. The compacting falling weight may be accelerated by spring, steam or compressed air means.
