Abstract

1,215,700. Valves. M. R. LENTS, J. R. BUTLER, M. G. MILLER, J. B. ATKINS, J. B. SAUNDERS, JNR. and K. B. FORD, [trading as J. R. BUTLER and E. E. HULSEY]. 27 Dec., 1967, No. 58695/67. Heading F2V. In a rotatable plug valve, the axis of rotation a-a of the plug is arranged at an acute angle X to the axis b-b of a maximum throughflow passing 21 which is alignable with inlet and outlet passages (20-20) if a valve body (10), Figs. 1-3 (not shown). In addition, elongated slots 22 are formed in the plug at spaced positions corresponding to the ends of the passage 21. The traces of these slots on the plug surface taper as shown in the circumferential direction, whilst their walls are inclined at an angle Y to the rotational axis which is preferably equal to the angle X. By this arrangement, the flow is variable down to a minimum whilst maintaining substantially straight line flow throughout. Blind portions 25 between the ends of the slots are provided with sealing 0-rings in recesses 27. An additional 0-ring is housed in a recess 29. In a modification, about half of the plug is removed at a plane just on one side of the recess 29. The invention is also applied to conical and spherical plug valves, Figs. 13-17 (not shown).
