Abstract

1,215,648. Extruding; compressing scrap. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 24 June, 1968, No. 30060/68. Headings B3H and B3P. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] A charge of particulate magnesium-base or aluminium-base alloy is compact extruded in a die by a punch, a proportion of the particles of the charge having a length to thickness ratio of at least two. The charge amy be compacted prior to extruding in a separate container or in an extrusion die mounted on a turret movable from under the compacting punch to a position under the extruding punch. The particles are formed by mechanical reduction of an ingot by machining or by jet atomization or disc atomization. The particles are shaped in a rotating ball mill or paint shaker containing steel balls or alumina cylinders. The contents are separated with a coarse screen and graded by an inclined table so that the spherical particles are rolled away from the elongated ones. The elongated particles may be flattened in a rolling mill. The aluminium alloy is normally compressed at room temperature whereas the magnesium alloy may be compressed hot or cold. For both alloys the extrusion is performed on a hot compact into a cylindrical can by backward extrusion.
