Abstract

1,212,385. Sealing. STANLEY WORKS. 19 Feb., 1968 [21 Feb., 1967], No 7956/68. Heading B6P. [Also in Divisions B3, B8 and F2] A strapping machine (see Division B8) for guiding and looping a band e.g. of plastics around an article by feeding it through a guide track, tensioning -and sealing the loop by a metal clip 154 and severing it from the remaining band comprises means for temporarily twisting the strap through 90 degrees at a sealing position. A shoot 74 guides the band through a metal seal 154 located between toothed jaws 150, 152. The band then passes through a guide 17 which twists the band through 90 degrees before it enters the track 14 (on the right of Fig. 2). Passing around the track it enters an auxiliary drive mechanism 270 (Fig. 14, not shown) which pulls the band, to prevent buckling, in the track and also guides the band into a guide 19, which rotates the band through 90 degrees in the opposite direction. The jaws close sealing the loop and the band is severed. The metal clips 154 are fed from the base of a magazine 159, Fig. 11, projecting at right angles to the side of the article on which the loop is sealed, by an oscillating stripper 162. The jaw 152 is operated by a pneumatic cylinder and linkage means 196-200. A reciprocating plate 168 (see also Fig. 2) advances to hold the clip between spaced fingers 166 during band feed. The jaw 152 includes spring loaded side members 212, 214, Fig. 12, flanking a replaceable crimping element 207. The members 212, 214 crimp the longitudinal ends of the seal while the element 207 deforms the central portion. The loop ends may be joined by welding instead of a separate seal (not detailed).
