Abstract

1,212,365. Thawing frozen foods. SANYO ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 8 Dec., 1967 [10 Dec., 1966], No. 56003/67 Heading A2D. [Also in Division H5] To ensure even heating of a body 14 during defrosting in a microwave oven 10, a cooling gas is circulated through the oven cavity 12 to cool the surface of the body and the microwave energy is progressively reduced during the defrosting operation. Air or inert gas e.g. CO 2 or N 2 is supplied by a blower 32 along a cooled passage 30 to the oven cavity and is returned via inlet 36 to passage 30. A heat exchanger 31 in the passage 30 co-operates with a cooling unit 31<SP>1</SP> beneath the passage. The microwave energy may be continuous or intermittent during defrosting. If continuous the intensity to finally reduced, and if intermittent the time periods of successive pulses may be successively reduced, or the intensity of microwave pulses may be successively reduced. Specific defrosting schedules for frozen loin pieces, chickens, cuttlefish and salmon are given in the Specification.
