Abstract
1,212,360. Distillation of essential oils under reduced pressure. CHAS. ZIMMERMANN & CO. Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [14 Nov., 1967], No. 51753/67. Heading B1B. Essential oils are distilled under reduced pressure in an apparatus comprising a still-pot 1, fractionating column 3, water-cooled condenser 5, distillate-cooler 11 and receiver 16 which is connected to vacuum pumps 18 via heat-exchanger 12, a refrigerant, such as ammonia or dichlorodifluoromethane, from unit 3 being circulated through cooler 11 and heatexchanger 12, whereby pressures between 10<SP>-1</SP> and 10<SP>-2</SP> mm. Hg can be obtained in the system without vapours entering the vacuum pumps. Still-pot 1 is heated by electric mantle 2 having control means on each heat band which enables it to be turned off when the level of oil drops below it. Column 3 may contain stainless steel packing. Both pot 1 and column 3 are lagged with asbestos jackets, and are provided with thermostats. The condensate formed in condenser 5 flows .through electronically-controlled reflux divider 4 so that a desired proportion of the condensate may be passed through line 6 and cooler 11 to receiver 16. The apparatus is rendered leak-proof by connecting the joints with polytetrafluoroethylene rings. An example relates to the distillation of peppermint oil.
