Abstract

121,146. Walster, J., and Walster, S. May 24, 1918. Resistance furnaces.-Coal-gas is formed from powdered coal, which is fed in the form of a cloud or fog to an electrically heated retort. As applied to a small plant suitable for motors, the gas is generated in a retort a of refractory material which is heated by electric resistances b supplied by a dynamo or by storage cells. The resistances b are enclosed in an insulating-cover c, lagging c<1>, and a rigid casing d. The powdered coal is fed by the suction of the engine from a divided chamber, in the lower portion of which the coal is agitated by a propeller or agitator m, and the finely powdered coal passes through a perforated diaphragm o to the upper portion l of the chamber, and thence by a pipe p to the retort a. In a modification, the electric resistances are enclosed in a tube in the centre of the retort a. The retort a may be corrugated and rotary.
