Abstract

1,210,867. Sulphur trioxide; sulphuric acid. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 14 Feb., 1968, No. 7343/68. Heading C1A. [Also in Division B1] Gas mixtures for catalytic conversion are fed into parallel gas channels 1, Fig. 3 or Fig. 7, Fig. 6 which have gas permeable walls 4, Figs. 3 or 7, behind which walls is the particulate catalyst 2 or 11 which is contacted by the gas mixture. The walls may be wire gauze or netting possibly coated with woven fabric or felt fabric material, and may be coated with catalyst. The gas flow through the catalyst may be laminar or turbulent. Conversions specified are oxidation of SO 2 with V 2 O 5 catalyst where the SO 2 comes from flue gas, the reduction of oxides of nitrogen in waste gases from nitric acid production using Pt catalyst, the oxidation of CO in automobile exhaust gases; and the oxidation of alcohols, ethers, esters, hydrocarbons, natural resins in waste gases from muffle furnaces.
