Abstract

1,208,731. Printing plates and processes. GEVAERT - AGFA N.V. 9 Oct., 1967 [24 Oct., 1966], No. 47632/66. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions C3 and G2] A reversed photographic printing master is produced by imagewise heating a material comprising a hydrophobic meltable or vaporizable top layer coated on a hydrophilic layer or a hydrophilic support (if there is no such intermediate layer) or a hydrophobic layer or support capable of being rendered hydrophilic and either image-wise removing the heated hydrophobic areas of the top layer or allowing these areas to penetrate into the hydrophilic layer or support and then inking up with a hydrophilic ink after or simultaneously rendering the exposed support or layer hydrophilic where necessary. In the example, a paper support is coated with a hydrophilic layer of acrylaniode/ sodium acrylate copolymer and a hydrophobic layer of wax, image-wise exposing to melt the wax and then inking up with a hydrophilic ink to produce a reversed printing master so disclosed in Specification 1,142,472. The heatsensitive material is preferably one of these listed in Specification 1,184,054 which has a top layer of wax or an organic compound and an underlying hydrophilic polymeric layer. Alternatively a hydrophilic support such as aluminium or hydrolysed cellulose acetate may be used instead of a hydrophilic layer or a layer such as zinc oxide in a binder may be used which is rendered hydrophilic after exposure and before inking.
