Abstract

A hollow walled water cooled crucible 1, made of gold, silver, copper, an alloy of one of these metals, or one of the foregoing coated with another of the foregoing, which may be used in a zone melting process, is provided with transverse or longitudinal depressions or projections 5 of such dimension that a molten charge in the crucible, due to surface tension effects, will not be able to wet all of the crucible internal surface. Heat exchange between the charge and the cooled crucible is thereby reduced. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) in which the crucible is formed from hollow tubes so closely spaced that material cannot escape between them, the tubes are provided with projections or depressions to produce the same effect.
