Abstract
1,208,564. Continuous casting; casting composite articles. GLACIER METAL CO. Ltd. 24 Aug., 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 23831/66. Addition to 1,174,764. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F2] By pouring different molten metals simultaneously through a graphite mould 1, one metal around the outside of an annular graphite mandrel 4 and the other through the mandrel, there is produced: (1) a rod or tube with a bonded sleeve or with a sleeve shrunken on to the rod or tube by cooling, or (2) a rod or tube with a separate sleeve around it, the tubes being cast if a central solid mandrel 16 is used. Production of the forms (1) or (2) is determined by the position of the sharp end 17 of the annular mandrel 4 with respect to the solidification front 14, i.e. it may be at the front, downdownstream of it or upstream as shown. A refractory runner 2, in a mould recess 3, controls the metal flowing outside the mandrel 4, while a refractory runner 5 controls the metal flowing through the mandrel. When starting, metal flows from a channel 13, both into the runner 5 through an opening 8 and around the runner, to form a rod of the metal. When this proceeds satisfactorily, the runner 5 is moved forwards and turned through 180 degrees so that the metal flows solely through the runner via an opening 9 and the other metal is applied through a channel 12 and the runner 2 around the mandrel 4. The inner tube or rod may be Al-Cu and the sleeve of Al or Al-Sn. The composite tube produced may be used to make nuclear fuel rods or for shell or split bearings if the inner tube is the softer. Reinforcing whiskers may be supplied with the metal in channel 12 or channel 13 or both. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,052,571 and 1,174,764.
