Abstract

1,206,337. Respiratory devices. G. EXLER. 3 July, 1968 [5 July, 1967], No. 31658/68. Heading A5T. A respiratory device for regulating the carbon dioxide level in the air inhaled and for use in adjusting the bicarbonate level of a patient comprises an inflatable reservoir 1 connected to a face mask 8 by a conduit 9, the reservoir having a two-way flow breather valve 10 (e.g. an adjustable orifice) and a one-way outlet valve 11. As shown, the reservoir 1 comprises two rigid end members 3, 4 joined by a flexible cylindrical plastics member, there 'being a guide rod 7 secured to the lower end member 4 and sliding through the upper end member 3 so that the end members are guided in their movements towards and away from each other as the reservoir deflates and inflates. The two way valve 10 comprises (see also Figures 2, 3, not shown) superimposed perforated parts (13, 19) able to be rotated relative to each other so as to provide an orifice of variable size but which never closes completely, and the oneway valve (see also Figures 4, 5 not shown) comprises a flexible diaphragm (35) arranged as a flap valve on one side of an apertured member (33). In use, the patient inhales and exhales through the reservoir, a proportion of exhaled carbon dioxide being retained for exhalation as determined by the setting of the breather valve 10. The position of the lower end member 4 may be adjusted relative to the cylindrical member so that the capacity of the reservoir may be varied.
